It is estimated nearly 13 to 20 million men, women and children from over 50 developing countries are engaged in small scale mining activities, with over 100 million dependent upon their activities (*CASM, 2009). These activities are primary located in South America, Africa and South Asia, in some of the world’s richest mineral resource bearing regions.
